Forest School

What is Forest Schools?

Forest school is an inspirational process that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

It is a holistic learning process, with children being given the freedom to explore their surroundings through a theme or activity led by the Forest school leader.

Forest Schools has a proven record of increasing children’s confidence, self-esteem and sense of well-being. This has also proven to have increased concentration and attainment in the classroom setting.

Who takes part in Forest School?

Children from nursery to year 2 take part in Forest School throughout the year, in all seasons and all weather. Each class is scheduled to take part in a block of sessions on a rota basis over the academic year.

Where does it take place?

Forest School takes place on our school site on a weekly basis in our Forest School Area. In addition to this provision we are exploring the possibility of the children exploring the Forest School site at Elvaston Castle where they will have an authentic experience of a local woodland area.

What do the children learn?

Activities for Forest Schools are diverse and numerous but it should be reminded that we are trying to create independent learners who are inspired to try out their own ideas, explore their own interests and to attempt new ideas.

 Some activities might include:

· Shelter building

· Fire lighting

· Tool use

· Studying wildlife

· Playing team and group games

· Sensory activities

· Tracking games

· Cooking on an open fire

· Using a Kelly Kettle

· Rope and string work

· Art and sculpture work

· Woodland and traditional craft

· Developing stories and drama, and meeting imaginary characters

· Physical movement activities
