Year 1

Overview

Our Year 1 provision is designed to support a smooth transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage while ensuring that children begin to engage more deeply with the expectations of the National Curriculum. The year group consists of two classes, where teaching combines structured learning with opportunities for exploration, independence and social development.

A key focus in Year 1 is the development of strong early reading and writing skills through the Read Write Inc. programme. Daily phonics lessons support children to build confidence in decoding, spelling and comprehension, helping them to become fluent readers and writers. Alongside phonics, children take part in engaging English lessons that promote language development through storytelling, discussion and purposeful writing opportunities.

Handwriting is taught every day to develop correct letter formation, pencil control and presentation. These skills are then embedded and enhanced in English by dictation and oral rehearsal, allowing children to practise applying their phonics knowledge within sentences. Oral rehearsal supports children in hearing, saying and structuring sentences before writing them, strengthening their fluency and helping them to embed their learning in meaningful contexts.

Mathematics is taught through practical and hands-on learning experiences, enabling children to explore mathematical concepts using concrete resources, discussion and problem-solving activities. This approach encourages children to develop a deep understanding of numbers, patterns and mathematical relationships while building confidence in explaining their thinking.

Classrooms are organised using a provision-based approach, supporting children as they move from the play-based environment of EYFS into the more structured expectations of Key Stage 1. Carefully planned areas of provision allow children to access self-directed learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, creativity and independence. Enhancements are regularly added to these areas to link with current topics and ensure coverage of the National Curriculum while maintaining a fun and engaging learning environment.

This approach supports the development of social skills, collaboration and communication, as children work together, share ideas and learn to manage their own learning. Adults guide and extend learning through questioning, modelling and targeted support to ensure that all children are challenged and supported appropriately.

Overall, the Year 1 environment balances structured teaching with purposeful play, helping children to develop academically while also nurturing confidence, independence and a love of learning.
